First thing you learn (or should I say, SHOULD learn) is to NEVER tackle with the crown of your helmet. My team teaches you that before you are even assigned to a specific position, offense or defense. I coach football and we always teach the kids to keep their heads up when they tackle or else something like that could happen. just because hes a professional doesn't mean that he never make mistakes. if its true that he is gonna be able to walk again then he just dodged a major bullet.
